This program will provide guests with a unique opportunity to live a day like a local, and feel what it is like to drive the cattle over a 20km (13miles) journey through Pantanal’s dirt roads, leaving early morning, along with the local cowboys, learning about their everyday life and culture, eating typical Cattle Drive lunches, followed by a well-deserved siesta in the hammocks. This is a special program for those wishing to experience a day in the life of the local cowboys, their culture, stories and traditions.
In Pantanal, the flood and drought cycles are the rulers that define all life in Pantanal and its dynamics and interactions. During the Wet Season, when Pantanal receives an enormous amount of fresh water, local ranchers are forced to drive their livestock to the higher lands that remain dry and safe during this time of the year, protecting their cattle from the natural flood cycles, and driving them back when all the flood water drains from the Pantanal plains.
Cattle drives also take place in the Dry season, as scorching temperatures dry up a great deal of the Pantanal’s flood waters, pushing the local ranchers to drive their cattle in search of wetter areas and green pastures. This is how the Cattle Drives first appeared in area, and have since then become an authentic aspect of the Pantanal culture, as the only way to move the livestock through Floods and Droughts, with the help of the local skillful cowboys, known as “Peões Pantaneiros”, adapting to the natural cycles of this unique biome and its staggering 250.000 km2 (96 thousand square miles) area.
