The western pacific coast of South America houses the longest mountain range in the world: The Andes. During the last 140 million years geological forces and natural cataclysms created such gigantic mountainous natural barrier that was capable of configurating the largest fresh water system on Earth: The Amazon river basin. Biodiversity found its space from the high Andes towards the eastern lowlands and spread amongst continuous territories covered by tropical rain forests that reached the Atlantic.
